Mr. Heater

Postby TCF Ranger on Wed Oct 22, 2008 5:14 pm

Well folks as the weather is starting to get colder and knowing from experience Bass Pro put these on sale all the time this time of year I am thinking about getting one. I was wanting to know if anyone has any experience with them. I currently have the Coleman ProCat Heater and it is 3,000 BTU and does a fairly decent job taking the chill out of the air of a 18x13 tent but I would like something a little bit bigger and the Mr. Heater has some nice features. I like the Big Buddy but it cost a little more but has 3 BTU settings and built in fan to circulate the air. The Portable Buddy has some of the other features but doesn't have the fan or automatic start and some other things. One thing I really like is that both have Automatic low-oxygen shut off system, tip over shut off, and they both can run off a 20 lb tank for longer run time compared to 7 hrs on the Coleman on one 12 oz bottle. I am planning a trip next month and would love to have one of these if they are good. They seem to sound like a really good camping heater to use in a tent.

So does anyone have any feedback or experiences on these Mr. Heater heaters?

Mine is a 1000 BTU and it's about worthless. I have it sitting in the storage closet collecting dust cuz I froze half to death using it last November......I think you need something AT LEAST 3000 BTU's (like you're talking about) to feel any different.

The Coleman ProCat that is 3000 BTU is ok if you were using it in a smaller tent and the fan helps circulate the heat. In my tent though being so big it took some of the chill out of the air but wasn't all that great and I doesn't run that long like the Mr. Heater. I like the Mr. Heater features that the Coleman doesn't have. I am thinking if the 3000 BTU takes the chill out of my larger tent then the Mr. Heater with the 4000, 9000, and 10000 BTU should work perfect. I am just curious if it is really a noticeable difference. I know when I was working at BPS the Portable buddy sold like hot cakes when they were on sale. I really like the fact you can run it off a 20 lb tank and the Low O2 shutoff and tip over shut off. So I am curious if they are as good as they are advertised.

Yea 1000 BTU wouldn't be practically at all except for maybe in an emergency like if you were stranded in your car or to keep your hands warm while fishing or something.

I think you hit the nail right on the head--it looks like it's for fishing or sitting in the bleachers at a cold weather game....LOL!
